Handel is perhaps not as well known as he should be as a composer of music for the harpsichord; at any rate I’ve only discovered his terrific works relatively recently. Here are two pieces, first a Fantasia in C major:
and secondly something better known, an “Air and Variations” (known as “The Harmonious Blacksmith”) from the Suite in E Major:
As with so many nicknamed pieces, the name was not bestowed on it by Handel, and its origins now seem lost. However both the piece, with its nickname, became popular in the early 19th century, when Handel’s music was only selectively known.
